Emergency First Aid at Work

Course objectives:

This all day accredited course is classroom based with  knowledge checks and practical assessments undertaken by the attendees. This course introduces candidates to:

  • Your role and responsibilities as a first aider
  • The legal requirements for first aid provision
  • The importance of accurate incident reporting
  • First aid equipment and its safe use
  • The need to minimise the risk of infection
  • The importance of assessing an incident
  • Undertaking a primary survey
  • When and how to call for help

On successful completion of the course you will receive a Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work.

Please note, participants who attend this course need to be physically fit and able to complete practical assessments, which may include kneeling down to give CPR and being a casualty placed in the recovery position.

Fire Safety

Course objectives:

A must do course for all employees! You will gain vital knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Action to be taken on hearing the fire alarm
  • Knowledge of escape routes, assembly points and roll call procedure
  • Action to be taken on discovering a fire
  • How to raise the alarm
  • Correct method of calling the Fire Service
  • Where to find and how to use firefighting equipment

Food Safety (Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering)

Course objectives:

Essential and recognised, accredited training for anyone whose job involves the handling and preparation of food. You will gain knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Introduction to Food Safety

  • Temperature control
  • Refrigeration
  • Chilling and cold storage
  • Cooking

Making Activities Matter

Course objectives:

Care homes and organisations are assessed against Essential Standards, which include promoting well being through day time activity. For anyone in residential or day care, whether they are elderly or have a learning disability, activities are vital to their sense of purpose and happiness. That is why this course is so important for anyone who is involved in providing meaningful activities for others. Join in on this very practical course where you will cover:

  • Why providing activities matters so much
  • Planning activities with the individual in mind
  • Designing and delivering activities (for individuals, groups and whole organisations!)

Moving and Handling People - Introduction

Course objectives:

A mandatory requirement for anyone who has to help move or lift people in any situation, as part of their job. Our experienced trainers are accredited through a Gloucestershire County Council approved training body and cover the following areas on the course:

  • What is manual handling
  • Your back, how it works and how to look after it
  • Safe and unsafe ways of working
  • Important legislation and responsibilities
  • A look at risk assessment
  • Safe moving techniques, including; assisted walking, sit to stand transfer, using hoists, slings and slide sheets and wheelchairs

You will get the opportunity to experience using equipment as both support staff and service user! Your competence is checked throughout the day, with lots of valuable trainer support, and you will receive an Orchard Trust Training certificate of attendance on completion of this course, which is valid for one year (after which you will need to undertake a Moving and Handling People Update course).

Moving and Handling People - Update

Course objectives:

A mandatory requirement for anyone who has to help move or lift people in any situation, as part of their job. Our experienced trainers are accredited through a Gloucestershire County Council approved training body. The trainer will review and build on your existing knowledge, ensuring it is current and high quality, covering the following areas:

  • What is manual handling
  • Your back, how it works and how to look after it
  • Safe and unsafe ways of working
  • Important legislation and responsibilities
  • The importance of risk assessment
  • Checking your technique, including; assisted walking, sit to stand transfer, using hoists, slings and slide sheets and wheelchairs

You will have the chance to use hoists, slings and slide sheets as part of a very practical, hands-on day. You will receive an Orchard Trust Training certificate of attendance on completion of this course, which is valid for one year.

Person Centred Approach

Course objectives:

This course is aimed at people working in a role where they support others. A person centred approach means ensuring that the support that is given and decisions made are based on individual needs and preferences. This course will help you to have a person centred approach in your day to day work. Areas the course will cover include:

  • Identify the values and behaviours that demonstrate working in a person centred way
  • Know the importance of legislation governing person centred care
  • Describe the use of “person centred planning tools”
  • Explain the differences between “person centred planning” and a “person centred approach”
  • Describe the benefits of positive risk assessing/enabling and encouraging well being/meaningful engagement

Safeguarding Adults Foundation

Course objectives:

This course, designed by Gloucestershire County Council and run by one of their approved trainers, will let you explore the following areas:

  • The safeguarding standards that apply to your working role.
  • What is abuse?
  • What types of abuse are there?
  • How to recognise an adult potentially in need of safeguarding
  • What to do about any concerns  you have – how to make a safeguarding alert
  • Important law and policy e.g. Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
  • Why dignity and respect need to underpin everything you do in your day to day work

A combination of lively discussion, case studies and real life examples helps to bring home the importance of the message of this training. On successful completion of the course you will receive an accredited certificate of attendance.

You should complete a level one Safeguarding course before attending this course. If you work in Gloucestershire you can complete the GCC Safeguarding Adults at Risk E-Learning via KWANGO or you could complete a Social Care TV package.

Dementia Awareness

Course objectives:

This essential course will increase your understanding of your roles and responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and demonstrates the importance of upholding safe working practices. The course supports Care Certificate Standard 13 – Health & Safety and Standard 15 Infection Control, and covers topics including:

  • The legal responsibility to work safely
  • Risk assessment tools and the definition of ‘Hazard’ and ‘Risk
  • Hazardous substances, and controlled storage and use
  • Recognising how infections occur and the precautions that must be taken to reduce the risk of acquiring an infection or contributing to the spread of infection

  • Components of fire and correct procedures in the event of a fire
