Communicating Effectively in a Learning Disabilities Environment

Course objectives:

This fun and engaging communication course has been designed to help people gain an understanding of how and why we communicate and the impact poor communication can have on a person with learning disabilities. You will also look at the “Developing the five good communication standards” as set out by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. The session is rounded up with a talk by a family member of a person with learning disabilities and autism to help gain their perspective.

Dementia Awareness

Course objectives:

This essential course has been structured by GCC to raise awareness in how to recognise some different types of dementia, the memory and how it functions, adapting the environment and our communication to help support individuals, the importance of well being, and reporting and recording any changes to support clients to live fulfilling lives. This course is aimed at an awareness level for candidates with limited knowledge around dementia and links into the Care Certificate Standard 9 and is delivered by an approved trainer. 

This course can be prepared in a way bespoke to your care setting should that be helpful.

Emergency First Aid at Work

Course objectives:

This all day accredited Emergency First Aid at Work course is delivered by occupationally skilled trainers. You can expect to learn how to manage a variety of first aid incidents such as minor cuts,  burns, seizures and choking, and when and how to call for an ambulance. You will learn and practice performing a primary survey and CPR  as well as using an AED.  You will be assessed with practical demonstrations throughout the day, and a short multiple choice quiz at the end.

It is a workplace’s duty to ensure that there are trained first aid staff to deal with any accidents that happen. Once trained the first aider will have the skills and confidence to deal with emergency situations that may arise, and may even help to save a life.

On successful completion of the course you will receive a Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work.

Please note, participants who attend this course need to be physically fit and able to complete practical assessments, which may include kneeling down to give CPR and placing a casualty placed in the recovery position. All safety precautions will be taken to promote an infection-free learning environment.

Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam - An overview and seizure management - Introduction

Course objectives:

An experienced trainer delivers this essential introduction course for anyone who works with clients with epilepsy. You will learn what Epilepsy is, and the causes. How seizures should be managed including when to call an ambulance. On this course you will also learn, and practice, medication administration including buccal midazolam.

It is important for anyone working with clients with epilepsy to be confident and skilled in the management of seizures and how to use rescue medication.

On completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance that will be valid for two years; after which we recommend you attend the epilepsy refresher course.

Fire Safety Awareness

Course objectives:

This short 2 hour Fire Safety Awareness course is a must have for all staff regardless of their job or sector they work in.  Amongst other things, in this course you will learn how to prevent fire from starting, what you should do if you hear a fire alarm, what action you should take  if you discover a fire,  and how to call the fire services.
You will gain vital knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Action to be taken on hearing the fire alarm

Food Safety (Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering)

Course objectives:

This  accredited food hygiene training is essential  for anyone whose job involves the handling and / or preparation of food.
In this interactive and busy course you will learn about how to safely store food, the principles of keeping a clean catering environment, temperature control of food, and how to safely reheat food. Mental Capacity Act and DoLS (LPS) - Level 2

Course objectives:

This essential course for anyone working in a care setting follows the course designed and distributed by Gloucestershire County Council, and is delivered by an approved trainer.
In this course you will learn about the 5 principles of the Mental Capacity Act, how capacity is assessed, what Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards are, and what might be a Deprivation of Liberty. You will find out about your responsibilities and who you can speak to for advice and more information.

Moving and Assisting People

Course objectives:

The moving and assisting of people is a mandatory training requirement for anyone working in Care who is involved in assisting people with their mobility in any situation.
During this course, amongst other things, we will look at the physiology of your spine and your back, how it works and how to look after it, plus the law and your responsibilities, and how to assess the risks in your moving and assisting tasks.  You will also get the opportunity to use a variety of relevant equipment and watch practical demonstrations.

Safeguarding Adults - Level 2

Course objectives:

This Safeguarding Adults course, designed by Gloucestershire County Council is facilitated  by an approved trainer. You will learn about what safeguarding is and your own role in safeguarding vulnerable adults. Also the different types of abuse and how to recognise indicators, as well as covering the mental capacity act and other important legislation, plus what to do about any safeguarding concerns you might have. 

During this course you will be talking about a range of abuse including domestic violence, which can understandably cause upset – if you think you might be affected by this you can let the trainer know discreetly at the start of the session or during the first break before the topic is discussed in depth. 

  • The safeguarding standards that apply to your working role.
  • What is abuse?
  • What types of abuse are there?
  • How to recognise an adult potentially in need of safeguarding
  • What to do about any concerns  you have – how to make a safeguarding alert
  • Important law and policy e.g. Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
